Austin Energy travels 1,000 miles to help power up north Florida after Hurricane Irma

Austin Energy sends crews to help restore power to Florida

AUSTIN - Austin Energy deployed several crews to Jacksonville, Florida early Sunday morning to help restore power, following Hurricane Irma's wrath.

Officials said Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) reached out to Austin Energy before the storm hit, anticipating dangerous winds would knock out power lines and leave hundreds of thousands of people in the dark.

Austin Energy said 31 employees and two City of Austin Fleet Services mechanics will arrive in Florida Monday, Sept. 11.

JEA is expected to reimburse Austin Energy for their help, officials said.
