Acevedo sworn in as Houston's police chief

AUSTIN - After a nearly 10-year tenure as Austin's police chief, Art Acevedo will be sworn in as Houston's new chief Wednesday morning.

After KVUE confirmed that Acevedo was leaving Austin, he advised that interim Austin Police Department Chief Brian Manley do what he thinks is right in order to keep Austin one of the safest cities in the nation.

"You go out and do your job, like it is yours to keep," Acevedo said. "Don't worry about losing it. Do what you know is the right thing to do, and do it to the best of your ability until the day they tell you it's not yours anymore."

Chief Acevedo said he hopes Chief Manley will continue putting his own practices in place.

Acevedo spent the past couple of days cleaning out his office and turning in his uniform and equipment.

He headed out to Houston for his new job last night. After his confirmation at 8:30 a.m., he will be sworn in at around 10:30 a.m.

Chief Acevedo will be back in Austin Friday for the swearing in of Interim Chief Manley.
