APD officer who faked his own death and fled to Mexico has resigned

An Austin police officer who seemingly vanished, then was accused of faking his own death is all but off the force as of Wednesday afternoon.

Coleman Martin, the Austin police officer who attempted to fake his own death before fleeing to Mexico, has resigned from the Austin police force, KVUE and the Austin American-Statesman's Tony Plohetski confirmed.

Martin, 29, was reported missing on April 25. On April 26, investigators found his truck abandoned near a lake in South Texas. On April 27, police spoke with a woman who said Martin was still alive and in Mexico. About a week later, Martin was arrested at DFW airport on a flight from Colombia on his way back to Austin.

Martin showed up at the Austin Police Department Sept. 6 with his attorney, Rachel Rogers, and resigned.

Martin still faces a misdemeanor charge of prompting an emergency police response when there was no need. The case is expected to be resolved soon.
