APD expanding ‘No Refusal' initiatives to every weekend

No Refusal weekends becoming more common

Austin police announced that it will conduct ‘No Refusal’ DWI initiatives each weekend through September.

“No Refusal means that if a suspect refuses to provide a breath or blood sample, and the officer has evidence of impairment, the officer shall apply to a judge requesting a search warrant for a blood sample,” the city states on its website.

APD said the initiatives will be in effect each Friday and Saturday night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning.

“No Refusal is not about making as many arrests as we can,” said Lt. Blake Johnson with APD’s Highway Enforcement Unit in a prepared statement. "It is about keeping unsafe drivers off Austin roadways and keeping the public safe. No Refusal ensures that we have solid blood alcohol content evidence of every arrest and as such enhances our ability to prosecute people who drive drunk and put others in danger.”
