It's one of the highest honors in the state for teachers, the coveted teacher of the year.
Austin ISD third-grade teacher Allison Ashley won elementary teacher of the year Friday during a ceremony at the Bullock Texas State History Museum.
"I was a little bit in shock, I really couldn't believe it,” said Ashley.
She's been a teacher for 9 years and now teaches in a bilingual classroom at Becker Elementary.
"I love how fun it is, I just try to have a fun classroom environment, and bring a lot of joy into my teaching,” said Ashley. "I think I learn a lot from the students, they inspire me every day and the hard work they demonstrate day in and day out.”
She also won the elementary teacher of the year award for Region 13 on Friday.
"It was really a true honor and I'm so thankful for the opportunity to be here and to have met all the great teachers in this room today,” said Ashley.
So what's her secret to success?
"It's really a lot of long hours and working collaboratively with other teachers, I feel like I've accomplished what I have just because of the colleagues I've been surrounded with,” said Ashley.
Now Ashley will become a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year, which the president will present in April.
