AUSTIN - As Austin continues to grow at a rapid rate, a developer is working to expand capacity at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport by revamping a terminal that hasn't been used in years.
Low-cost airline Viva Aerobus began using the South Terminal at ABIA in 2008. With the recession that started that same year, the airline halted service in 2009. Flights are expected to begin departing from the South Terminal on April 13.
The idea for this addition came about when leaders at the City of Austin Department of Aviation realized ABIA had reached passenger capacity and needed to find a way to bring in more flights. Jeff Pearse, CEO of Lonestar Airport Holdings, LLC, said it was an easy decision to come to Austin.
"They needed additional capacity at this airport to meet the ever-growing demand for air travel in this market," he said. "This is a small step because demand for air travel will continue to grow in Austin."
The new terminal will have a theme from the 1950s and 1960s. The concept connects with the fact passengers will board planes by going outside the terminal and using air stairs.
"Not only does it link historical Austin into the mix, it also references our interest in mid-century modern design cues," Pearse said.
Another key addition to this terminal will be one of the state's first indoor/outdoor waiting area with bar and live music.
"I think it's a first for a major Texas airport," Pearse said. "You can enjoy food and beverage and music on an outdoor patio. I think it's going to be a home run."
Not only will this new terminal bring 36 flights a day and 500,000 per year, the addition should bring 30 full-time employees, not including airline or TSA staff.
Travelers using the South Terminal will have to take a different route compared to the Barbara Jordan Terminal. The address of the new terminal will be 10000 Logistics Lane, Austin, TX 78719.
The best way to get to the terminal is to go past the 71 East exit you usually take to get to the other terminal. Then you continue on Highway 183 before turning left on Burleson Road. Then after turning left on Emma Browning Ave, you should be at the terminal in about one mile.
