After years of anticipation in San Marcos, an extension of Wonder World Drive is finally open. It's a 3.5 mile stretch between Hunter Road and Ranch Road 12, west of Interstate 35.
Hundreds turned out for a fun run Saturday morning, giving people an up-close look at the new road.
The extension allows drivers to bypass downtown, saving time as they head west.
Designers describe it as state-of-the-art. Drains capture and filter water before allowing it back into the soil, and there is a hike and bike trail, as well as new landscaping.
The project comes at a cost of nearly $58 million, or about $18 million per mile.
Up to 16,000 cars per day are expected to use the new extension.
