Woman killed after car runs red light

AUSTIN -- A woman was killed after being struck by a car that ran a red light on Dec. 29.

Austin police said 35-year-old Joann Brothers was traveling southbound on FM 973 and turned eastbound on SH 71 when the driver of a 2010 Nissan Titan traveling westbound on SH 71 ran a red light and crashed into the driver’s door of Brothers' car.

Brothers was transported to University Medical Center at Brackenridge Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was pronouced dead at 9:38 p.m. as a result of the injuries she sustained in the crash

A passenger in the Toyota was not injured. Neither driver nor the four passengers in the Nissan were injured.

The driver of the Nissan was issued citations for running a red light and expired driver’s license.

This was Austin’s 78th traffic fatality of 2012. There were 53 traffic fatalities at the same time in 2011.
