Doug Ferguson returned to the crash scene late in the afternoon Saturday. He put up a memorial, lit a candle and prayed for the two women who lost their lives waiting for the bus.
“God rest their souls and just put their souls in peace in this area and help them pass on,” said Ferguson.
Saturday morning Ferguson was around the corner and about to catch the number 10 bus northbound on South First Street near Emerald Wood Drive.
“I heard some squealing from what I knew was a car over correcting,” he said. “The car just plowed over the bus stop it was horrific the noise was just horrendous. At that point several people were leaving to go to work and immediately called 911.”
Three people were waiting for the bus. One man was able to jump out of the way. But two women were not and were run down by the silver Toyota Celica. One victim died at the scene, the other died later at the hospital.
“I just thank God that I wasn’t here,” said Ferguson.
He calls the accident pointless and says the city didn't do enough to prevent it.
“I feel there is a little bit of negligence on the part of the city,” he said.
With two women dead lots of questions remain. Manny Villarreal has a theory and believes the driver wanted to race him.
“I was at the S. First Street and Stassney intersection and the driver revved his motor at me,” he said.
Villarreal says the driver then sped off.
“He was accelerating to about 90 MPH. He was in the inside lane coming around I [seen] him lose control and correct it. When he came around the second turn, he lost complete control. He slammed into the curve shot across the side and took out the bus stop with two people.”
Neighbors say this is not the first time an accident has happened here. The association says it has tried but failed to get a stop light installed. The medical examiner has not released the names of the two women.
