Some old friends gathered in Austin Saturday to share their memories of World War II. For years, veterans of the USS Enterprise have held a national reunion.

The Enterprise played a major role in World War II during battles in the Pacific. The ship downed hundreds of enemy planes and sank dozens of ships.

It also built a bond among those aboard. Their relationships endured the decades. Yet age and health are starting to take a toll. Which is why organizers say that this year's national reunion will be the last.

"I think we held things together until we got the new construction out there. After '43, they started coming out with the Essex and some of the others. But we were holding the fort there, I would have to say," explained QM1c Roger Goff.

The USS Enterprise was decommissioned in 1947.
