SUNSET VALLEY -- Rain left damage, mud and debris in Sunset Valley last weekend. This weekend, volunteers gathered to help area homeowners clean up.

Some parks remain closed due to damage and some homes had as much as five feet of water inside. When Williamson Creek raged through neighborhoods in Sunset Valley, a great deal of debris was left behind.

Volunteers went to Sunset Valley on Sunday to help shovel out some of what was left behind. Several flatbed trucks removed dirt from homes in the neighborhood.

All of the dirt, lumber and tree limbs removed from the area were relocated to the city dump, where it will be mulched and reused.

Sunset Valley mayor Rose Cardona said about 20 homeowners said they needed help.

"It looks like half of South Austin actually moved and relocated to her backyard," Cardona said.

Volunteers said they will probably return next weekend to continue the cleanup. Residents said they were overwhelmed at the help from the city and volunteers.
