The University of Texas is opening itself up to scrutiny. The campus is considering a change of name to Simkins Residence Hall, one of its oldest dormitories. However, some don't want to see the history surrounding the hall memorialized.

The brick exterior building with burnt orange metal doors opened to student housing in 1955. It was a modern building in its time; the first to offer air-conditioned comfort.

It was named in honor of former UT Law Professor William Stewart Simkins. Simkins taught at UT from 1899 until his death in 1929.

Before leading the classroom, Simkins was a known member of the Ku Klux Klan, the KKK. He organized the Florida Klan and committed violent acts against freed slaves.

Recently, the University has received notes of concern regarding the relation. President William Powers since launched an initiative for more public opinion. He wants recommendations on whether Simkins Hall should be renamed.

“I think they should change it,” said Sara Gray, “(The KKK) stand(s) for hatred and bigotry and, so yeah, they should change it; call it Martin Luther King Hall.”

A spokesperson with the university itself wasn't immediately available for comment but said there have also been letters opposing the name change.

One graduate writes against the change. He calls himself a “black graduate” of UT in the 1960s and feels changing the name of the hall erases a piece of history: "(It’s a) narcissistic attempt at re-writing Texas history, specifically history of the University of Texas."

One of two scheduled public meetings begins Tuesday afternoon.

From 4:00pm-6:00pm the University will listen to testimony. Sign up begins at 3:30pm. The meeting will be held at the Main Building in Room 212.
A second forum will be held June 28 from Noon-2 p.m. in San Jacinto Residence Hall Multipurpose Room (Room 207).
Those who are unable to attend, but who wish to provide input, may e-mail vpddce@austin.utexas.edu.
