AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Regents of the University of Texas System have earmarked nearly $35 million to upgrade computer security.
The Austin American-Statesman (http://bit.ly/tAPXfv ) reports the money approved Thursday will pay for equipment, software, and salaries and benefits for eight new information security workers.
Officials say all 15 of the UT system's academic and health campuses will benefit from the computer system improvements.
A review by Deloitte & Touche LLP found inconsistency across the campuses for managing and evaluating the risk of data leakage, intrusions and other information security hazards. Specifics were not released on which campuses had problems.
Hackers in 2006 obtained information on about 173,000 people, including Social Security numbers for 84,000, from UT-Austin's McCombs School of Business.
