AUSTIN -- A University of Texas soccer player will have a long and difficult recovery after being hit by an alleged hit-and-run drunk driver.
Kylie Doniak's family has set up a website to chronicle her road to recovery. A CAT scan shows she's experiencing some brain swelling and she is sedated. She suffered a significant head injury, a punctured lung, broken ribs, and a broken bones in her right leg.
At about 2 a.m. Friday, Doniak and two friends were crossing the street at 8th Street and San Jacinto when witnesses say a Chevy Impala driven by 22-year-old Nicolas Colunga ran them down. He kept going, but was caught by a motorcyclist who chased him for several blocks.
Colunga is charged with two counts of failure to stop and render aid and charged with intoxication assault. He's in the Travis County Jail with bond set at $60,000.
His arrest warrant says he told police, "I know I hit someone" and that he was "nowhere near sober."
Monday night the university's Athletes in Action is holding an open prayer hour to express their love and support for Kylie. They say anyone who knows and cares about the young woman is welcome to attend. It's happening at 7:30 p.m. on the first floor of the San Jacinto dorm.
