It's a big day for KVUE and the University of Texas at Austin as Belo, KVUE’s parent company, helps break ground on a new communications building.
It started with a $15 million pledge three years ago – the first pledge made toward the new center and the largest donation ever made by the Belo Foundation.
On Thursday, dignitaries from Belo and UT were on hand to help break ground on the Belo Center for New Media – a building that will expand teaching and research facilities for UT’s College of Communications.
The five story, $50 million, 120,000 square foot building will have state of the art classrooms, production labs and a multimedia digital newsroom.
It will also become home to KUT, Austin's public radio station.
Just to give you some perspective -- here's why this is so important.
The current college of communications opened in 1974 with the idea to serve a thousand students.
Today, there are more than 4,200 students who attend class in that building.
The Belo Center for New Media is scheduled to open in June 2012.
KVUE's Terri Gruca is covering the ground breaking and will have live reports on KVUE News at 5 and 6.
