AUSTIN -- Austin Independent School District police are asking parents to be on heightened alert after a nine-year-old girl reported two suspicious men in a black pick-up truck seen lurking near Travis Heights Elementary School.

"A young girl was walking alone when a white man and black man driving in a small black pick-up truck stopped and asked her if she needed a ride. One of the men got out. The child ran away and called her mother," said Austin Police Department Corporal David Boyd.

Boyd says the child told the men she doesn't talk to strangers. She got away unharmed. Boyd says she handled the situation very well.

"We don't know what these guys' intentions were in the first place," said Boyd.

The Austin ISD police chief wants to assure parents that kids are safe, but just as a precaution the police department is adding extra patrols around Travis Heights Elementary.

The manager of a nearby apartment complex is posting fliers warning parents to beware of the men and to report any suspicious activity. You can see a picture of that notice attached to this story.

Anyone with information is asked to call Austin police.
