ROSWELL, N.M. -- U.S. Marshals with the Southwest Investigative Fugitive Team (SWIFT) has arrested 60-year-old Gary Calvin Whiteis in connection with multiple burglaries in Southwest Austin.

Whiteis was arrested in Roswell, N.M. around noon Friday. Investigators in New Mexico say Whiteis recently returned to Roswell from Austin.

The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, comprised of several Central Texas police departments, sheriff's offices and state departments, determined earlier this week that Whiteis had fled to Roswell and were able to locate his residence.

Police believe Whiteis is responsible for more than 20 home break-ins in Southwest Austin. Whiteis will remain in the Chaves County Detention Center in Roswell pending his extradition to Travis County.
