AUSTIN -- Developers are fighting the City of Austin over the use of their app during SXSW.
SideCar helps smartphone users who need a ride hook up with users who have a car and could use some extra cash.
The City sent SideCar a cease and desist letter, saying the app amounts to an illegal taxi company and violates city code. The letter threatens to impound participating cars.
SideCar's CEO says sharing resources shouldn't be a crime. He started an online petition on the website which has more than 3,000 signatures so far.
