AUSTIN -- A SWAT standoff in South Austin ends peacefully with one person in custody.
Austin police responded to a disturbance call involving gunfire just before 2 a.m. Monday on Palace Parkway near Dittmar Road in South Austin.
Officers say 40-year-old John Pace McBryde locked himself inside the home after shooting at a woman. The woman managed to get out safely and called police. When responding officers couldn't get the man to come out of the home, they dispatched the SWAT team.
Around 6 a.m., nearly four hours after the initial 911 call, the man surrendered to police.
Senior APD Officer Veneza Bremner says he surrendered after SWAT members fired tear gas into the home.
"He came out of the house crawling. [He] went out of view of the officers but eventually listened to their commands," said Bremner.
Bremner says the man has an outstanding warrant for a prior assault charge. Officers will determine what additional charges will now be filed. Their investigation into what started the disturbance is still underway.
Police are also interviewing the woman involved. Police say the two are not related. It's unclear how they know each other.
