Austin police arrested a man Thursday morning after an hours-long SWAT standoff.
Police were called to the Avendaro at Canyon Creek Apartments at 9807 N FM 620 near Concordia University Texas Thursday morning.
Police say the suspect, whose name has not been released, barricaded himself inside the apartment with his girlfriend. When officers arrived, the girlfriend left the apartment. The suspect refused to come out. Officers called the APD SWAT team for assistance.
Several nearby apartment units evacuated. Those residents sat inside a Capital Metro bus that police ordered to the complex to give the residents shelter from the winter weather.
Police say the same man caused two prior disturbances in the night.
“Earlier tonight officers responded to an HEB in Pflugerville on 1825 in response to an assault, family violence where the suspect assaulted his ex-girlfriend,” Sgt. Jaime Jobes of APD said. “Shortly after that they responded to a burglary call in the 1000 block on Woodland Village Drive.”
From Woodland Village Drive police were then called the man’s apartment unit. After several hours negotiating with SWAT members, he gave himself up to officers without incident. Police took him into custody.
A judge has signed a warrant relating to the alleged burglary. More charges could follow.
