ROUND ROCK, Texas -- One of the safest places to live in the country is right here in Central Texas. The city of Round Rock has been ranked as one of the top spots for safety in a study based on low crime statistics.
Krave Bar and Bistro is a popular new restaurant in Round Rock. It used to be boarded up and dilapidated.
Owner Susan Mendenhall got rid of raccoons invading the building and has made some remarkable improvements.
"We wanted to keep it as original as we could but still update it," Mendenhall said.
She adds that she picked Round Rock for a reason.
"All the statistics and everything that we did, we looked up before moving and actually starting our business here, was phenomenal about Round Rock and what this community does for each other," she said.
According to this year's congressional quarterly press report, the city of Round Rock is the 11th safest city in the U.S. among cities of 100,000 people or more.
"One of the things that attracted me to Round Rock was because of the schools, communities and I raised my kids here," former State Representative DeAnna Maldonado said.
"Low crime rates, good opportunity for business expansion and good schools," Michael Cork, who works in Round Rock, said.
"I feel really safe here," Savannah Givens, a sophomore at Round Rock High School said.
Crime rate rankings are calculated by using six crime categories including murder, rape, robbery, burglary, aggravated assault and motor-vehicle theft.
Round Rock is considered the second safest in Texas compared to other cities of the same size. It's a fact that many who live there don't find surprising.
"It's grown a little bit. I see more investment here as the community expands, the more tax dollars get brought into the area," one resident said.
