AUSTIN -- Gone are the hopes of red light runners in Round Rock.
"Anything that's going to slow traffic down, anything that's going to keep people following the rules, I'm all for it," said driver Brian Zitz.
What better way to follow the rules than to take a picture of the culprit? After years of waiting, Round Rock is now counting down until red light cameras go up. Plans include as few as four and up to 10 cameras at dangerous intersections.
Whether you're smiling for the picture or not, rule breakers get a $75 fine in the mail.
"We just want to see fewer people running red lights, and getting a fine is one of the ways you modify behavior," said Will Hampton with the City of Round Rock.
The red light cameras comes with a cost of $3,400 a month. The city says the best part is taxpayers won't have to pay a thing; the fines from the tickets should more than cover the cost.
"It's not about generating revenue," said Hampton. "It's more about creating safer intersections in Round Rock."
Intersections on the list for cameras are definitely in need. A 10-minute wait at Round Rock Avenue and Deep Wood Drive netted KVUE crews a truck who didn't hesitate to run right through a red light.
"People are just so quick to get past that stop sign, that stop light, so they can get through that school zone," added Zitz.
"We'd love to not have to have them anymore because no one is running any red lights; that's the ultimate goal," said Hampton.
Other spots on the list include Red Bud Lane and Forest Creek Drive, in addition to several near I-35.
