CEDAR PARK, Texas -- A veteran firefighter has been named chief of the Cedar Park Fire Department.

James Mallinger, who has served Cedar Park FD for more than 16 years, was selected by the city this week. Mallinger began his career with the department in 1996 and has served roles such as assistant fire chief and emergency management coordinator.

He had been acting as interim fire chief since June of this year.

“Being selected as the next fire chief for the City of Cedar Park fulfills the dream of leading the department where I have enjoyed the majority of my career,” Chief Mallinger said. “I look forward to continuing the excellent service and relationships the Cedar Park Fire Department has built.”

Chief Mallinger will lead a department with 66 firefighters, three civilian staff members and a $6.8 million budget.

“Chief Mallinger’s experience, training, sincere passion and dedication to the CPFD have led me to this decision,” Cedar Park City Manager Brenda Eivens said. “I was very pleased with the caliber of chief candidates, and feel that Chief Mallinger is the right person to lead our fire department.”

On Nov. 29, the Cedar Park City Council will review the recommendation. More than 55 people applied for the job.
