AUSTIN -- Downtown streets swelled with racers for Austin's Marathon and Half Marathon. Nearly 18,000 racers hailed from around the world and all 50 states.
"I'm from Connecticut. My sister lives in Austin, so I ran the marathon in Hartford in October, and I'm looking forward to beating my time," said racer Jillian Kelley.
Planning for the race started the day after last year's event. It took 3,000 volunteers to make it run smoothly. The race also included a 5K to benefit the historic Paramount Theatre.
Sarah Madebach won first place in the women's division.
"It's awesome, it feels really great," she said.
Racers say the course was challenging. Craig Leon finished his half marathon in 66 minutes.
"You have several big hills. I think of Texas as being flat, but Austin definitely has some hills," said Leon.
The men's overall winner, Joseph Mutinda, collapsed at the finish line giving everything he had to win first place.
