AUSTIN -- The Lakeway police officer killed in a wreck on his way to work has been identified.
Lakeway police confirm Sgt. Chris Doles was killed in the crash involving two pickup trucks in northwest Austin Thursday around 7:15 a.m.
It happened on RM 620 near Boulder Lane. RM 620 was shut down but reopened around 11 a.m.
The Travis County Sheriff's Office is assisting the Austin Police Department with the investigation. Investigators say Doles, headed south in his Toyota Tundra, crossed into oncoming traffic and hit another truck pulling onto the road. His truck then veered into a tree. The other driver is okay.
Officials tell KVUE Sgt. Doles had been working for Lakeway PD since 2011. He retired from the Waco Police Department after 20 years on the force.
“When something like this happens, it really is a blow to all of us,” said Austin Police Assistant Chief Steve Deaton. “It just really hits home. It just makes us realize how precious life is and how sad it is to lose somebody that's part of this family.”
Witnesses saw fellow officers saluting as the medical examiner took Sgt. Dole's body away. One police officer followed the truck as it left the scene.
"That's a tradition in the law enforcement community when something like this happens. We don't want to leave the officer alone. Even though he is deceased, he's still part of our family and there'll probably be law enforcement present with him until his funeral," Deaton said.
Flags in Lakeway are flying at half mast in Sgt. Doles' honor.
"I was horrified," said Susan Moore, who lives in Lakeway and heard the news this morning. "620 is really getting to be very dangerous, and I was just horrified basically."
She has nothing but good things to say about the police department.
"A marvelous police department here in Lakeway; we all really like it," she said.
Doles had a wife and three children. He also served as guardian to a niece and nephew.
