AUSTIN -- Some residents of a Southwest Austin apartment complex are concerned about their safety after a morning break in and possible sexual attack.

It happened at the Legacy at Western Oaks apartments near MoPac and Davis Lane located at 8801 La Cresada Drive.

Police say they're still locking for the man who broke into a woman's apartment.

The woman told police she was in the shower when the man came into her apartment. It is believed that the suspect’s intent was to sexually assault her. After a brief struggle, the suspect ran away.

APD Detective Michael Crumrine wouldn't get into details of the woman's injuries, but says she was taken to the hospital and will be okay.

"He broke into her house, and she was able to call 911 and ask for help," Crumrine said.

Police responded to the 911 call. They searched the surrounding area and even had a helicopter up for assistance before calling off the effort.

Patricia Miller also lives at the Legacy apartments. When asked whether anything has happened before, she said yes.

"Yes unfortunately it has. This is a nice community, and I would suggest people moving here, but we do have our problems," Miller said.

She doesn't like that her security gate is often open.

"That's one of the questions that I do have that if it is gated, why does it stay open you know, all day?" Miller said.

Police say the attacker was last seen heading towards Dick Nichols Park. Parents there say they're surprised to hear about the nearby attack.

"I've never felt unsafe or had a reason to feel unsafe," one parent said.

During the search, Mills Elementary also took precautions by keeping all children indoors and notifying parents.

"The manager said he would send something out to the residents," Miller said.

On-site management declined comment, and gave KVUE a name a phone number to call. KVUE did not receive a call back from the apartment complex.

Police say this case remains under investigation.

The suspect is described as:

 - Hispanic or light skinned black male in his late 20s or early 30s

 - 5’08” – 5’10”

 - 150 – 180 lbs.

 - Last seen wearing a gray LSW hoodie and blue jeans

Anyone with any information is asked to call the sex crimes tip line at 512-974-5095 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS.
