AUSTIN -- Police are searching for a driver who hit and killed a man in South Austin but never stopped to help.

Vehicular homicide detectives were called out to the Interstate 35 frontage road near William Cannon around 4 a.m. Friday.

Officers don't know when the accident happened. Another driver saw a man's body off the side of the road and called for help. Police say the man was already dead when they arrived.

“We don’t know if he was walking in the middle of the roadway or if he was walking in the grass when he was hit,” said APD Cpl. Anthony Hipolito.

APD shut down the frontage road so that detectives could search the area.

“[They] look for any skid marks, any tail lights, any lights, any type of evidence that might lead them to a particular vehicle,” Cpl. Hipolito. “There’s nothing at this time we’re able to give out. There are no witnesses.”

With no vehicle description, detectives are relying on witnesses who may have information to call 911.

This is the second fatal hit and run in Austin this week.

“It happens too much,” said Cpl. Hipolito. “It’s inexcusable. If you hit somebody do the right thing and stop. You’re compounding the issue by leaving the scene. Stay and do the responsibility thing and wait for police and call 911. That way whoever you hit gets the help they need.”

The victim’s name in Friday's crash hasn’t been released.
