AUSTIN – Austin’s self-proclaimed “Home of the Blues” had its debut Thursday night in East Austin.
The brand new Antone’s opened Thursday after moving from its downtown location less than two weeks ago.
“You know this is a pretty nice space. I liked the other spaces, but this has some real class to it. I think people are going to really like it,” said Michael Maguire, an Antone’s regular for 25 years.
Clifford Antone opened the first Blues club bearing his name on Sixth Street in 1975.
The location has moved five times in almost 40 years.
The newest location at 2015 East Riverside has a lot more parking for cars and a lot more room for music lovers inside.
The facility which used to be the Beauty Bar has two levels and a wooden dance floor right in front of the stage.
“One big thing is that there are two stories. Two bars. We had two bars at the old one but there were both on the same floor but sometimes it was tough to get to them. So this has two floors, four bathrooms, a VIP section,” said general manager Ray Colgan.
Antone’s has signed a 10-year lease at the East Riverside location.
