AUSTIN -- The number of guns seized from airports is on the rise nationwide, according to a study conducted by the Medill National Security Journalism Initiative.
Last year the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported a 20 percent increase in gun seizures since 2012. In 2013, a total of 1,828 guns were confiscated across the nation.
The increase in seized handguns is the third largest annual jump since 2010.
When guns are seized at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, TSA turns them over to the Austin Police Department. It is illegal to carry a handgun aboard a commercial airliner, but security officers say passengers are allowed to travel with a gun in their checked baggage.
Of the guns seized, 84 percent were loaded.
Austin is number 16 in the nation for airport gun seizures, with 27 guns confiscated last year.
