SAN MARCOS, Texas -- People who use the San Marcos river and all city parks need to be aware of new rules for the new year.
Styrofoam containers and all things styrofoam will be banned. So will the display and consumption of alcohol.
You can still drink if you rent a private pavilion, and you can have alcohol on the river during activities like kayaking or tubing.
Plus, additional smoke free areas will be established.
Park Ranger Manager Jeff Caldwell said the additional restriction on alcohol is to reduce the number of incidents and accidents. Caldwell said getting rid of styrofoam is for the environment since styrofoam doesn't break down.
The rules were approved by San Marcos City Council in May in effort to make the parks safer, cleaner and more family friendly.
The fine for littering will also increase to a minimum of $250.
