AUSTIN -- A six-year-old girl has drowned at a North Austin hotel.

EMS said Monday afternoon that the incident happened at the Red Roof Inn on Interstate 35, between Rundberg and Braker Lanes.

Austin police say the girl was playing with friends when she went under, and the adult watching them realized she didn't come up from underwater.

Emergency personnel say when they arrived, a bystander was trying to do CPR and revive the child. EMS took over and continued for 30 minutes. But doctors at Dell Children's Medical Center pronounced her dead just after 3 p.m.

The girl's mother was not at the pool when the incident happened, but victims services took her to the hospital.

Travis County EMS tells KVUE that it appears the 6-year old girl did know how to swim, and they're not sure how she drowned.

Austin homicide detectives spent the evening investigating the scene, which is standard protocol.
