AUSTIN -- Police are asking for help in finding those responsible for dumping motorcycles and parts into a local lake.

The Austin Police Department's Auto Theft Unit says after receiving a tip, they found 12 motorcycles and frames in Lake Austin.

The DPS Dive Team is helping APD recover other materials in the water in the third day of the search.

Police are investigating who put them there and when. They believe someone has been stealing the bikes, using the parts, and dumping them in the lake. Police believe there is a pattern.

Investigators say the dumping is harmful to the environment and dangerous for boaters and swimmers. The parts are ruined from water damage.

Detectives have linked most of the bikes to owners who have made insurance claims.

If you have information on this case you are asked to call APD at (512) 974-5096.
