AUSTIN -- Police are investigating two cases of child endangerment after two children were found alone at an Austin motel. One of the children was found wandering an empty motel parking lot.
Rosa Morales-Mares, 22, and Kimberly Valdez, 20, are both charged with abandoning or endangering a child, which is a state jail felony.
According to arrest warrants filed in Travis County, on August 4 around 2:21 a.m. Austin police were called to 5330 North Interstate 35 at the Motel 6 where a two-year-old boy was found alone in the parking lot. A two-year-old girl was found alone in a motel room nearby. A security guard at the motel reported the incident.
Police say Mares, a mother of one of the toddlers, admitted to leaving the kids alone while the women "went to a club."
Investigators say they have surveillance video of a woman leaving the motel around 1:03 a.m. She did not return until 5:28 a.m.
Mares admitted she left the toddlers unsupervised for approximately 4 hours.
Officers say the Motel 6 is located on the I-35 access road -- a high crime area known for drugs and prostitution.
If convicted, the women face up to two years in jail.
