A monument honoring some of Texas’ earliest black lawmakers now sits at the Texas State Cemetery in East Austin.
The monument commemorates the state's first black legislators and constitutional convention delegates dating back to 1868.
There were no formal cemetery records for many of them, and now they can be remembered and honored for their service.
The Texas State Cemetery is the final resting place for some of the most notable figures in Texas history, including Stephen F. Austin, former Lt. Governor Bob Bullock and former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan.
