AUSTIN – Meals on Wheels and More needs volunteers to fill 46 open meal routes across Austin.
The organization says this is the most vacancies its had in several years.
Open routes are routes that do not have a volunteer driver assigned to them. When routes cannot be covered by volunteers, Meals on Wheels and More must rely on paid staff drivers, which they say increases administrative and gas costs, and reduces the amount of money that can be spent on clients. Meals on Wheels and More counts on volunteers to deliver 90 percent of the 500,000 meals it distributes annually.
“Volunteers are so vital to our mission. Without them, we would be unable to provide meals to the thousands of homebound people we serve in Austin,” said President and CEO of Meals on Wheels and More Dan Pruett. “We encourage Austinites to consider donating just an hour of their time, once a week, to help us help those in need.”
