AUSTIN -- With the holiday season fast approaching, Meals on Wheels and More is sending out a call for help.
The organization, which is the largest meal-delivery organization in Texas, need volunteers for nearly 40 meal routes. Meals on Wheels expects they'll have even more openings in the near future if volunteers cancel during the busy holiday season.
When routes can not be covered by volunteers, the organization must pay staff drivers which increases administrative and gas costs, and reduces the amount of money that can be spent on their clients.
“Our volunteers are a huge reason why we are able to touch the lives of thousands of home-bound people in Austin”, said President & CEO of Meals on Wheels and More Dan Pruett. “Right now, we need more members of the community to come forward and volunteer to help their neighbors in need.”
Meals on Wheels relies on volunteers to deliver 90 percent of the nearly one million meals it distributes annually.
Meals on Wheels is also looking for substitute drivers to fill in during the holiday season.
