If you had to pick an animal that would best represent Austin-- what would it be?
Mayor Lee Leffingwell wants the Mexican free-tailed bat to be named as the official animal of the Capital City.
Austin's bat colony draws more than 100,000 visitors to the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge each year and generates millions of dollars in tourism revenue.
Tuesday, Leffingwell announced he will introduce a proposal to make the bat official.
If the city council approves the proposal next Thursday, Austinites can look forward to the first Sunday in June as "Night of the Bat" with a free evening concert on the Congress Avenue Bridge.
To kick off the first Night of the Bat, Adam West, the original TV batman has agreed to appear.
