AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Dallas-based organization has donated $9 million to an Austin museum to construct a lakeside sculpture park.
The Edward and Betty Marcus Foundation announced the gift to The Contemporary Austin museum on Tuesday.
Foundation chair Melba Whatley said the board members decided to donate all of the foundation's remaining funds to finance a major transformative step forward for the Texas arts community.
The museum will spend $5 million to commission and acquire permanent sculpture for The Contemporary's 12-acre Laguna Gloria grounds on Lake Austin. The museum will set aside $2 million to maintain the new artwork and the remaining $2 million will go to exhibitions and public activities.
The Contemporary Austin is the new name for the Austin Museum of Art and Arthouse, which merged in 2011. For more information go here.
