AUSTIN -- Austin homicide investigators have discovered that what was initially believed as a suicide of a Hispanic man was a homicide.

28-year-old Lee Martinez was pronounced dead on March 12, 2012 from what responding officers were initially led to believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Homicide investigators later discovered that another occupant inside the residence fired the weapon.

On October 11, a case for criminally negligent homicide was presented to the Travis County Grand Jury and the suspect was no-billed. Martinez’s death was ruled a homicide.

Police said they responded to a welfare call at 615 Thrasher Lane at 9:35 p.m. on March 11. Martinez was transported to the University Medical Center at Brackenridge where he died.

This case reclassifies the number of homicides in the City of Austin for 2012 to 33.
