AUSTIN -- Police have arrested a driver for fatally hitting and killing a pedestrian earlier this week in North Austin.
Cesar Estuardo Marcario-Calvac, 28, was arrested for hitting a man in his 50s in the 6800 block of North Lamar Boulevard near Justin Lane just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, May 7.
A witness told police that a white car hit the man while he was walking east to west on Lamar before taking off. The witness tried to follow the car but lost sight of it.
Police said the pedestrian was taken to UMC Brackenridge where he died. Police have not released the victim's name.
Around 11:15 p.m. a security guard found an abandoned white Volkswagen Jetta in a parking lot off Anderson Square. Police said the car had damage and looked like it had hit a pedestrian.
Police found information inside the car which led them to Marcario-Calvac. He has been charged with failure to stop and render aid, a third degree felony. He is currently booked in the Travis County Jail.
This is Austin's 28th traffic fatality crash this year.
