AUSTIN -- A freight train hit and killed a man near a MetroRail station in East Austin.
It happened near MLK and Alexander Avenue around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Police say the man was trying to cross the tracks when the train hit him. Conductors were unable to stop the train in time.
Police don't know why the man ran across the tracks. They believe warning lights were flashing and the crossing arms went down as the train was moving through.
Sgt. Robbie Volk with the Austin Police Department says "As far as we can tell in this point of the investigation, yes, everything was working properly."
Officers are going through evidence, including surveillance cameras at the Cap Metro station to see if anything was captured.
Although the crash happened on Capital Metro tracks, the train doesn't belong to Capital Metro.
It's unclear what the train was carrying or where it was going. Police have only said that it was heading southbound.
