AUSTIN -- Police have identified both the suspect and the officer involved in an officer-involved shooting in North Austin on Saturday.

Police said Austin police officer John Gabrielson was working when he was flagged down by a hit and run victim. The victim pointed out 22-year-old Fernando Estrada's truck. Investigators say when the officer tried to stop Estrada in a Shell gas station parking lot at Rundberg Lane and Interstate 35, the man tried to hit the officer with his truck.

Police said as the man tried to leave the parking lot of the gas station, he hit two cars on the way out. He sped west down Rundberg Lane and, during the police chase, he hit another car. It ended when he crashed his truck at the intersection of Rundberg and Lamar where police arrested him.

Estrada has been charged with evading with a motor vehicle and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle.

Officials say Gabrielson has been put on administrative leave, following protocol for such incidents.
