Man arrested in crash that killed 1, injured another

AUSTIN -- A man has been arrested after fleeing the scene of a collision that killed one person and injured another.

Eligio Avila, 60, was arrested shortly after he fled the scene of a crash just before 8:30 p.m. Sunday on 6200 W. US Hwy 290 westbound.

Police said a Nissan was stopped at a red light when Avila, approaching the light, did not attempt to brake and collided with the rear end of the Nissan.

The front passenger in Avila's car was pronounced dead at the scene. A second backseat passenger in Avila's car was transported to University Medical Center at Brackenridge with non-life threatening injuries.

This is Austin’s 29th traffic fatality of 2013. At this time in 2012, there were 24 traffic fatalities.
