AUSTIN -- Lifeworks opened a new 45-unit apartment complex in East Austin on Friday.
Young parents and families who make 30 to 50 percent of the median family income will call The Works at Pleasant Valley home.
Several units are set aside for young people who have just aged out of foster care and can often end up on the streets.
Ashley, 19, is one of them. She will move in with her 2-year-old daughter on Saturday.
"I can hardly believe that Anabel and I will have a key to our very own place, a door to lock and feel safe, my own refrigerator and my own bathroom," she said.
The complex is located next to Lifeworks and Austin Community College, with easy access to public transportation.
Lifeworks' goal is to help these families become self-sufficient.
