A new sentencing trial begins for Laura Hall. Hall faces up to ten years in jail for her involvement in the 2005 murder of Jennifer Cave.
Hall’s lawyer made one last attempt to postpone the trial Monday morning, hours before jury selection was slated to begin.
Joe James Sawyer based his motion for a continuance on new evidence he received from prosecutors last Thursday. Sawyer says he discovered a witness he hadn't heard about before.
The judge, Wilford Flowers, denied the motion.
Hall was last in court in February. At the time she said she felt confident of a lesser sentence.
“She is resigned to the fact that we must go to the trial. She is bitter. She's angry, but we just have to cope with that,” said Sawyer.
She was initially sentenced to five years for her conviction of hindering apprehension and tampering with evidence in Cave’s murder. After Hall served17 months of that sentence, an appellate court overturned the ruling.
The jury selection in her new sentencing trial is expected to take only one day. Opening statements are scheduled for Tuesday morning.
