JOHNSON CITY, TEXAS -- Johnson City police say a home owner shot an intruder early Monday morning.

The intruder was identified as Christopher Ricketts of Johnson City.

Police say just before 1:30 a.m. August 1, a man was awakened by Ricketts inside his home. The home owner fired one shot from his 9mm pistol, striking Ricketts in the left upper chest.

Investigators say the home's front door was unlocked and Ricketts did not force his way in. The home owner didn't know Ricketts, who wore a backpack, with only a screwdriver and sock inside.

Ricketts was transported to Brackenridge Hospital with life-threatening injuries; he is in stable condition in the intensive care unit.

"This case involving the home invasion and home owner shooting the intruder appears to be justified, however JCPD will submit this case to the district attorney and present the facts to a grand jury in Blanco County, Texas," stated Chief of Police Randy Holland.
