TRAVIS COUNTY -- An inmate died Friday June 28 at the Travis County Correctional Complex, according to the Travis County Sheriff's Department.
Around 2:20 p.m., an inmate reported that another inmate was hanging in his cell. The corrections officer notified jail medical staff and started life saving measures. They also called Austin/Travis County EMS to the scene.
The inmate, identified as 27-year-old Jhane Frye of Austin, was pronounced deceased at 3:02 p.m. He had been in the custody of the jail since his arrest by Austin police on January 22. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second degree felony, and a misdemeanor warrant from Williamson County.
Major crimes detectives as well as internal affairs detectives and the Travis County Medical Examiner's Officer were called to the scene to begin an investigation, which is the procedure in these cases.
The initial examination by the medical examiner and sheriff’s detectives indicates the death was a suicide. The medical examiner’s office will not issue a ruling form their office until toxicology reports have returned and the autopsy is complete.
