When is bluebonnet season?

The answer to that question is simple: right now!

According to Barbra Rodriguez at the University of Texas at Austin’s Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, bluebonnet season “varies by year. It depends on the weather and how quickly it warms up.”

However, since last fall was lacking in the precipitation department, and February saw an unforgettable arctic blast, this year’s bluebonnets might not be as prevalent as in years past.

Damon Waitt, the senior botanist at the Wildflower Center, says he is cautiously optimistic about this wildflower season and thinks it is going to be a decent year, “just not a banner year.”

“The expected early spring mix of wildflowers will likely be there, but in smaller numbers than last year because of inadequate rain during their growing season,” Waitt said in a press release.

A batch of Texas’ state flower is already blooming at the Wildflower Center, and you can get a sneak peek with the center’s bluebonnet cam.
