AUSTIN, Texas -- Hundreds of volunteers spent Saturday serving the Austin community in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The MLK Day of Service is an Austin tradition. United Way Capital Area and Hands on Central Texas organized the event. It includes more than 20 community projects throughout the area.
The day started with a rally. State Rep. (D) Dawnna Dukes of Austin told the crowd serving the community is a way of following Dr. King's dream.
"The dream of taking pride in community, the dream of civil justice, the dream of economic equality," Dukes said.
Saturday morning volunteers cleaned up trash along MLK Boulevard. This is the 13th year volunteers have beautified the roadway in King's honor.
"He gave so much to the community. As a community we should give back," volunteer Andrew Ward said.
Last year 700 volunteers gave their time.
