AUSTIN -- A grand jury has indicted accused Capitol gunman Fausto Cardenas, charging him with making a terroristic threat.

Cardenas is accused of firing several shots on the south steps of the State Capitol in January. Witnesses say he had been denied a meeting with a Senate staff member shortly before the incident.

The grand jury, which meets in secret, handed down the indictment on March 18, according to a court official.

Cardenas, who remains at the Travis County Correctional Complex, has been in custody since he was arrested by the Texas Department of Public Safety only minutes after the shots were fired. He was believed to be reloading his gun just before he was arrested, according to court documents.

According to jail records, Cardenas' bond is set at $250,000 and the charge against him is a third degree felony.
